áttir
áttir by Lilja María Ásmundsdóttir is a work for voice, electronics and sound sculptures, composed especially for Heiða Árnadóttir. The work was originally performed on the spring equinox in 2026, when day and night are almost equal in length. This moment in the year marks a point of balance and transformation, ideas that are reflected in the musical language and material of the work.
The work is based on graphic notation, using photographs of the same plant taken at different times of the year as the basis for the score. The opening section draws on photographs of the plant taken in February 2023, serving as a kind of passage towards the spring equinox. The second section uses photographs taken around the spring equinox in 2023, while the final section is based on images taken during the summer of that year.
The work takes inspiration from the cosmos and the weather, as well as from ideas of visibility and invisibility, exploring how the material and the intangible emerge and interact. Lilja has created sound sculptures from a variety of materials, which will be placed at different locations throughout Fríkirkjan Church. At specific moments in the work, Heiða activates these sculptures, creating a living dialogue between voice, space and material.
