Lunacy: a Joyous Play
Opera by Guðmundur Steinn Gunnarsson

People travel the world over to experience various kinds of mind-altering drugs. But what about just entering psychosis? Wouldn’t that be fun?

The spectators will be invited into a joyous psychotic play and can discover for themselves the magic and mysteries of
psychosis and lunacy and explore the wonders of the mind to its limits.

Professor Atli Ingólfsson described Einvaldsóður (2017), Guðmundur’s first opera, as follows: “Here was a performance of an opera of Wagnerian length, breadth and depth. This was a major event on the Icelandic opera scene, rarely eclipsed in its proportions.” The same opera was chosen as one of five key pieces of the decade 2010–2020 by the
magazine Aesthetics for Birds. Now, seven years later, Guðmundur Steinn returns with a brand-new opera that will leave no stones unturned and yet no questions answered.

First-hand descriptions of psychosis inform the piece.
