The half Icelandic, half Swedish soprano, Vera Hjördís Matsdóttir completed a master degree in classical music vocal studies at Royal Conservatoire The Hague, Netherlands with Frans Fiselier in 2024. In March of the same year, Vera competed in Vox Domini, a singing competition in Iceland and received a prize for best performance of a song by the contest's composer, Hildigunnur Rúnarsdóttir. Vera was a voice fellow at Opernfest Prague 2023 and a 2023 recipient of a scholarship from the Iceland National Bank (Landsbankinn). She was also chosen as the recipient of the Halldór Hansen scholarship when completing the Bachelor degree from Iceland University of the Arts in the spring of 2020, where she studied with Hanna Dóra Sturludóttir, Kristinn Sigmundsson, Ólöf Kolbrún Harðardóttir and Þóra Einarsdóttir.

Most recent projects include debuting in the role of Barbarina in Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro in a production in The Reykjavik City Theatre (Borgarleikhúsið) in February of 2025 as well as her participation in an opera by Þórunn Guðmundsdóttir, Hliðarspor and Brím, an opera by Friðrik Margrétar- Guðmundsson and Adolf Smári Unnarsson. She also sang the soprano solo part in a performance of Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle in Salurinn concert hall in Kópavogur under the baton of Stefan Sand..

Last year, Vera appeared at the Reykjavík Opera Days in Harpa’s Norðurljós recital hall, where she and pianist Helga Bryndís Magnúsdóttir performed Schumann’s song cycle Frauenliebe und Leben in a staged version by Snæfríður Sól Gunnarsdóttir. She was also awarded a solo recital in Harpa’s Velkomin heim (“Welcome Home”) concert series, together with pianist Einar Bjartur Egilsson. Vera took on the leading role in a new Icelandic opera by Sigrún Gyða Sveinsdóttir, SKJÓTA and performed the soprano solo part in Oratorio de Noël by Saint Saëns under the baton of Stefan Sand.

Vera is one of the founders of Óratoríusveitin, a new Icelandic music society dedicated to the performance of various concert works.
