Mótettukórinn was founded by Hörður Áskelsson in 1982 and has long been one of the leading choirs in Iceland. It was originally founded as the church choir of Hallgrímskirkja but has in recent years operated independently. The choir regularly performs with the Iceland Symphony Orchestra and other orchestras. The choir's repertoire is long and varied, it includes numerous oratorios, passions and soul masses, as well as acapella choral works from various periods. The choir has also premiered a number of Icelandic compositions. The choir is conducted by Stefan Sand.
